How to setup your workstation for processing

This tutorial describes, end-to-end, the steps to setup a workstation for data processing.

Workstation minimum specs

The workstation can be a desktop computer or a laptop, as long as the minimum specifications are met.

  • Operating System: Windows 10 or 11
  • CPU: i7 minimum
  • RAM: 32GB minimum
  • Storage: SSD 500GB minimum
  • GPU: NVIDIA or AMD with 4GB of dedicated RAM minimum

To reduce the computation time and optimize point cloud rendering, workstation specifications can be higher than the one mentioned above. While we recommend asking a specialist to get the best out of your workstation, here a few pointers about hardware specs.

  • A better CPU (higher frequency, faster cache and memory) is the most important as PPIMMS runs mainly CPU-based computations.
  • Having the latest SSD technology and fast peripheral access is also great as PPIMMS reads and writes data on the SSD drive.
  • Except if you wish to run parallel computation (several instances of PPIMMS opened), a large RAM is not needed. Moreover, running parallel computation makes sense only if your CPU workstation can handle it.
  • A better GPU, with more dedicated RAM will improve navigation and rendering of the point cloud in the PPIMMS viewer.

Prelude

Depending on your purchase, 1 or 2 software will be used:

  • PPIMMS is the main software. Among other it does trajectory computation, loop closure, GCP insertion, colorization, filtering, etc.
  • Qinertia is used for differential PPK GNSS related topics.

Both software can be installed on several computers at a time but both software can only use the license on one computer at a time. Their licensing differs (fixed vs float). Please read carefully the section below.

Licensing format

PPIMMS license is a fixed license attached to a workstation. There is however the possibility to change the license from one workstation to another every 7 days. If done more often, the licensing server will identify it as a fraud and block your license. You will then not be able to use the software. If this happens, please contact the support.

Qinertia is a floating license. Within an organization, every time a user logs into the software, she/he takes over the licensing token. If other users were already using it, they will be ejected from the software.

PPIMMS setup

Installation file download

Download the .exe file (at this link) to install the software. Should this not be the latest version, you will always be able to upgrade it later from the interface in PPIMMS once installed.

Software installation

Right-click on the .exe file and “Run as administrator”.

Should a warning appear, click on “More info”.

Then click on “Run anyway”.

On “Select Setup Language” choose your preferred language (English of French).

Click “Next” on the homepage of the setup application.

Read and accept the license agreement if you wish to pursue the installation. Then click “Next”.

Choose your program installation folder in Windows (C:/Program Files/Viametris/PPiMMS2 by default) and click “Next”.

Should it not be your first installation, a pop-up window will appear. Click “Yes”.

Choose your Start Menu preference, then click “Next”.

Choose your desktop shortcut preference, then click “Next”.

Click “Install” to start the installation.

The installation process will run.

Once completed, select both “View the Change Log File” and “Launch PPiMMS2”.

The change log lists all the features, bug fixes and miscellaneous adjustments of the software releases.

Working directory setup

Once PPIMMS launched, a pop-up window “Set Working Directory” appears.

We recommend you to create a folder /PPIMMS on your fastest SSD drive and select it.

Click “Select Folder”.

Click “OK” to complete the selection.

Licensing

A pop-up window “Product Registration” will appear.

You will need to provide the license number that you were given at purchase. Then click “OK”.

This number can be found on your delivery slip. It should have the following format: PPIMMS-xxxx-xxxx-xx.

The software will inform you that it needs to access the internet to verify your license. This will be done every 24hours when opening the software. During these time period, you can work “offline”. Click “OK”.

The software will attempt to connect to the internet to verify your license.

If a pop-up window appear notifying iMMS/iMS2D/iMS3D users of the software compatibility. Select “Do not prompt again” then “OK”.

The software will open. It is ready to be used.

GPU software settings

To make the best of out PPIMMS, ensure that it is using your high-performance NVIDIA/AMD GPU.

To do so, open the Windows settings.

Then go to System -> Display -> Graphics.

Select “PPiMMS64” then click on “Options”.

Select “High performance”. Click “Save”.

Qinertia setup

Installation file download

Download the .exe installation file at this link.

Click on the latest link below “Downloads”.

Click on “Download Qinertia (Windows)”.

Software installation

Once downloaded, right-click on the .exe file and then “Run as administrator”.

The setup wizard opens. Click “Next”.

Read and accept the License Agreement if you wish to pursue the installation. Then click “Next”.

Select the installation folder (by default C:/Program Files/SBG/Qinertia) then click on “Next”.

Choose your shortcuts preferences, then click “Next”.

Click on “Install”.

The installation will run.

Once installed, select “Launch Qinertia” then click on “Finish”.

Qinertia will open. A login pop-up window will appear asking for your Qinertia account credentials. You will first need to create an account and validate your license (as described in the next section) before inputting your credentials.

Licensing

After your purchase, you or your administrator (email given to SBG Systems for the account creation of your company) will receiv an email. Spams to check if necessary. Click on accounts.sbg-systems.com.

A page in your web browser will open. Click on “Sign up here” and complete the account creation.

Once the account creation completed, go to “Licenses” and click on “Activate”.

Type in the license key number send in the email and click “Activate”.

Your Qinertia account is now set up. From the “My Oganization” tab you can create additional users to allow them to use the license as well.

To do so, click on “Invite user” and type the email address. The person will receive an email and will have to create her SBG Systems account to be able to use the license.

When opening Qinertia for the first time, it will ask for your credentials. Type in your email address and password.

As your credentials are now associated with a valid activated license, you can now use all the software functionalities.
