HAMEL Géomètres-Experts, a company based in western France, recently undertook a large-scale project, scanning 40 municipalities in just 2.5 months using the 3D mobile scanner MS-96 with his car kit system.
Objective: Identify surface features and map underground networks with unparalleled precision.
We spoke with Jean Baptiste Geldof, expert surveyor and Technical Director of the company, to get an inside look at this project.
The goal was ambitious: scan 850 km of roadways in 3 months and map surface features of water networks (manhole covers, grates, inlets, electrical cabinets, and poles) in GIS format.
Our artificial intelligence automatically identifies the position of manhole covers within the images and point cloud generated by the MS-96. Each detection is then validated by an operator, leading to significant time savings.
The data support the redesign of master plans for wastewater and stormwater networks. But their potential extends far beyond: the goal is now to raise awareness among local authorities about the many other possible applications, particularly for modernizing infrastructure management, which still relies on outdated plans.
